Family travels 6,500 miles to see son play 13 minutes at World Cup

A father who travelled thousands of miles to see his son get just a handful of minutes at the World Cup has said he has no regrets whatsoever about making the trip.

Callan Elliot, originally from Annan in the south of Scotland, made it into the New Zealand squad for the tournament currently taking place in the US, Canada and Mexico.

He appeared as a late substitute in their opening game with Iran but did not get any more game time as the All Whites failed to make it out of their group.

Despite his relatively fleeting appearance, proud father Steve said: "We wouldn't have missed this for anything."

Callan was eligible to play for either Scotland or New Zealand but chose to represent the country his family moved to when he was turning seven.

His parents - Steve and Susan - travelled 6,500 miles (10,500km) to watch their opening game at the massive SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Callan came on for Tim Payne late in the second half of the 2-2 draw with Iran, the only point New Zealand managed in the tournament.

Steve said they felt he did enough to merit a chance in the other two group games.

"Although he only got 13 mins he stood up extremely well and was praised by his coach but perplexingly didn't get any more game time which was frustrating as we felt he deserved to - maybe a biased opinion," he said.

"We were all so proud of him."

However, he added that he was pleased that the game which Callan was involved in had been attended by other family members.

"It was good that two of his brothers were there to see him get on," he said.

"It brought back memories of them playing football in the garden at our home in Brydekirk over 20 years ago."

At just 26, the defender has time on his side to make a bigger mark in future.

"I'm sure Callan's goal now is to make right back his own in the All Whites for the next four years at least," said his father.

"He thoroughly enjoyed an unforgettable experience and wants to do it again, who wouldn't?".

His family, too, had a great time.

"The Sofi Stadium was our first game and it is absolutely amazing - $5bn I believe to build, state of the art - an unforgettable memory," said Steve.

"The BC Stadium in Vancouver was also impressive but not quite up to Sofi."

He said the fan zones were also "tremendous set-ups" and "hugely supported" and the family would undertake their World Cup adventure all over again in a heartbeat.

"What we felt was pride, excitement, frustration and disappointment," said Steve.

"But lock us in for next one if the football gods smile upon us and Callan."
