ATLANTA — Lionel Messi stepped to the spot ready to bring Argentina level with Egypt in their round of 16 match at Atlanta Stadium but instead saw his shot saved by Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Ahmed Shobeir.
Argentina fullback Nicolas Tagliafico won the spot kick, getting cleared out in the penalty area shortly after Yasser Ibrahim's 15th-minute opener gave the North African squad a 1-0 lead early.
Messi had the ball on the spot in the 21st minute but sent his left-footed effort low and to Shobeir's left, where the goalkeeper was able to push the shot away with both hands. After Egypt cleared the ball, Shobeir put his head to the ground in thanks for having made the save.

It's the second penalty that Messi has had saved in the tournament, having also failed to convert in the ninth minute of Argentina's group match with Austria. Still, he scored two goals in that match, pushing Argentina to a 2-0 victory in a perfect group stage for the Albiceleste
Messi entered the match tied as the leader in the golden boot race, with his seven goals level with Norway's Erling Haaland and France's Kylian Mbappe.
