The Boston Bruins played last season without an official captain, the first time they had done that in a quarter-century.

It seems unlikely they'd do that again. At some point, it's safe to expect the Bruins to name a new captain.
And on paper, there are just two options.
David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy were two of the three alternate captains in 2025-26, along with Hampus Lindholm.
McAvoy seemed like the candidate to take over after Brad Marchand was traded to the Florida Panthers, but that didn't happen.
Now, Pastrnak might be considered the favorite.
A new article from Hunter Crowther of Daily Faceoff predicts that it will indeed by Pastrnak earning the 'C' for the season ahead.
"It felt like an inevitability that Charlie McAvoy would be next to serve as captain," Crowther wrote. "The Bruins have had several defenders wear the ‘C’ for long periods, including Ray Bourque and Zdeno Chara, and McAvoy has been a major presence on the club in his nine full NHL seasons. But after they went through the entire 2025-26 season without naming a replacement, it feels like they’ll never give it to him. Enter Pastrnak, who finished 2025-26 with his fourth straight 100-point campaign, had 32 more points than second-place Morgan Geekie and was the primary reason why Boston made it to the playoffs."

Pastrnak just turned 30 years old in May, so giving him the 'C' seems to be a solid long-term play. Boston shouldn't be looking for another captain soon if they do give it to Pastrnak.
It doesn't seem like there'd be anything wrong with naming McAvoy, either. It's a good problem for the Bruins to have.
It's also not clear what kind of timeline this could happen on. It's just pretty safe to suggest at this point that by the time the season starts, the Bruins will once again have a captain.
