According to a report from Miguel Serrano, relayed by Defensa Central, the Portuguese manager has largely settled on his preferred Real Madrid starting XI for the 2026/27 campaign, with only a handful of positions still open to competition.
According to reports, Mourinho is happy with the core of his squad after several high-profile arrivals, although he is still pushing the club to strengthen in two key areas before the transfer window closes.
How will Mourinho integrate new signings?
Mourinho’s defensive setup already looks relatively clear. Summer signing Marc Cucurella is set to start at left-back, while Ibrahima Konate has been identified as one of the leaders of the new-look defence after arriving from Liverpool.
On the opposite flank, Denzel Dumfries is reportedly viewed as the first-choice right-back and one of the manager’s guaranteed starters ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Further forward, Aurelien Tchouameni and Bernardo Silva are expected to form the midfield double pivot, combining physical presence with technical quality as Mourinho looks to strike the right balance in the centre of the pitch.
The biggest uncertainty remains on the right side of the attack.
Serrano believes Federico Valverde is currently the favourite to occupy that role because of his energy, tactical discipline and ability to contribute in both phases of the game.
However, Arda Guler is also in contention and could still force his way into Mourinho’s strongest lineup depending on his performances.
While the projected Real Madrid lineup appears close to being finalised, the report stresses that further changes remain possible before the new season begins.

Despite being satisfied with much of the squad, Mourinho has continued to request reinforcements in two specific positions.
The Portuguese coach is still eager to bring in a naturally left-footed centre-back to improve balance in defence, while another midfielder also remains on his wishlist.
Interestingly, Serrano believes the club is well positioned to make at least one more addition before the deadline without first having to sanction any major departures.
He said, “I think the squad is already balanced. I’m convinced there will be at least one more signing without needing to sell anyone.”
