When the All-Star voting results came out on July 2, Caitlin Clark was ranked 2nd by fans, 3rd by the media, but 11th by the players. Paige Bueckers led the guards with an aggregate score of 1.25 while Clark was third at 4.5. Analysts like The Athletic’s Annie Costabile were quick to point out the discrepancy, and now, after Candace Parker, former WNBA All-Star Stacey Dales has come to Clark’s defense.

“You see Caitlin Clark ranked 11th, and it is insulting. It is preposterous to consider that she would be deemed worthy of only being the 11th-best guard in the WNBA,” Stacey Dales said on ESPN First Take. “To further the discourse, some believe she’s not even worthy of being in the top four or being a starter among these All-Stars. To me, that’s foolishness because you have to look at the basketball.”

Caitlin Clark averages 20.5 points and 7.9 assists per game after that disappointing game against the Sparks. Those numbers are still good enough to make her the 7th-best scorer and the second-best in assists. When the players voted, her averages were even better. In fact, she still is shooting a career-best 42.6% from the field with a career-low 4.6 turnovers per game.

“What’s really challenging is that she’s hard to blitz. She’s hard to double-team. She’s as good a passer as she is a scorer, and that makes her a menace to defend. That’s why you see a lot of the contact,” the 2002 WNBA All-Star added.

“That’s why, frankly, egos come into play. You aren’t getting got by Caitlin Clark when you step between those lines. It also makes her very difficult to officiate. There are a lot of layers.”

On July 8, former WNBA champion Candace Parker also defended Clark. “I think people need to look at themselves in the mirror and realize, like, man, you’ve got some insecurities if you’re sitting down and putting Caitlin Clark as the eleventh best guard,” Parker said on the Post Moves podcast.

The narrative that Caitlin Clark is not particularly liked by her peers is not new. It has been a part of Clark’s career storyline since she debuted in 2024. Earlier this month, even Geno Auriemma agreed that there are some “personal animosities” in the league.

However, that ranking below Paige Bueckers and Olivia Miles and the No. 11 may not accurately represent the overall sentiment. As per ESPN, only 47% of the players voted.

Regardless, Clark will still be an All-Star starter, courtesy of fan votes and the media. However, this debate may lead the league to look into its All-Star voting process.
