Patrick Peterson Believes Vikings Give Kyler Murray His Best Opportunity Yet

When the Minnesota Vikings signed veteran quarterback Kyler Murray in free agency, it set up a competition with former first-round pick J.J. McCarthy. While there are still questions surrounding how the situation will unfold, former Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson believes Murray has landed in the best situation of his NFL career.

Speaking in a one-on-one interview with DJ Siddiqi of Casino.ca, the former Vikings defensive back praised Minnesota as an ideal destination for his former Arizona Cardinals teammate while acknowledging there are still hurdles to overcome.

Peterson pointed to head coach Kevin O'Connell as one of the biggest reasons he likes the fit. Having played under O'Connell during his own time in Minnesota, Peterson said he witnessed firsthand how the Vikings coach was able to tailor his offense to maximize Kirk Cousins' strengths. He believes O'Connell has the coaching ability to elevate Murray as well.

However, Peterson also identified what he sees as the biggest question entering the season.

"My biggest concern for Kyler Murray in this situation is: is he going to be able to adapt to how Kevin O'Connell wants to call plays, or is Kevin going to have to adapt to how Kyler Murray wants the offense to be run? It's going to be a very, very sticky situation," Peterson said.

Despite those concerns, Peterson expects Murray to win the job as Minnesota's starting quarterback over McCarthy. He cited Murray's résumé as a former No. 1 overall pick and Pro Bowl quarterback, arguing that experience and proven production typically give veterans an edge in competitions like this, especially considering McCarthy's current situation.

Peterson also believes Murray is stepping into a far better supporting cast than he had during much of his career in Arizona. He highlighted Minnesota's championship-caliber defense, balanced offensive roster and established No. 1 receiving threat as factors that should allow Murray to play more freely instead of feeling like he has to carry the team every week.

“We just have to wait and see which offense they're going to want to operate under, because we know for the most part the Minnesota Vikings offense, they operate up under the center. Kyler Murray never really had to operate under the center in college and his time in Arizona. So it's going to be very, very interesting to see how the Minnesota Vikings offensive attack is going to be this year," said Peterson.

While Peterson stopped short of calling this Murray's final opportunity as a franchise quarterback, he did describe it as his "last best chance." He noted that quarterbacks who get second or third opportunities often land with rebuilding teams lacking talent, whereas Murray joins a roster that is already built to contend.

Ultimately, Peterson believes the opportunity is there for Murray to remind the NFL why he was once considered one of the league's brightest young talents at quarterback. Whether he takes advantage of it, however, will depend on how quickly he meshes with O'Connell's offense and whether he can capitalize on what Peterson views as the strongest roster he's ever had around him.
