They haven't always been good enough this season against left-handed pitching, which is why they traded on Tuesday for Jahmai Jones.
Jones has had a rough season for the Detroit Tigers, but last year, he had monster numbers against southpaws.
And what that really means? Jarren Duran might not get as much playing time going forward.
In order to make room for Jahmai Jones, the Red Sox have optioned Nate Eaton to Triple-A.

Seems like the Red Sox are hoping for Jones to be a better version of Eaton as a lefty mashing outfield option.

Duran has had a bumpy season overall, but he's always been a worse hitter against the same side left-handed pitching when he faces it.
This season, Duran has gotten 86 at bats against lefties and has a .587 OPS.
For his career, Duran has an .804 OPS against righties and just a .615 OPS against lefties.
It would make sense for Boston to put Jones into some platoon situations with Duran. They both do things well, but they might both be suited to be more specialized than Duran has been this season.
If the Red Sox are to go on a second-half run, they have to send up optimal combinations of players. Jones provides them an option against lefties that they didn't really have before.
