Report: Bronny James may not be traded to LeBron James' next team

Other than a possible sign-and-trade for forward Jonathan Kuminga, which still seems possible, the Los Angeles Lakers seem to be mostly done making offseason moves. They lost LeBron James, Marcus Smart, Luke Kennard, Rui Hachimura and Jaxson Hayes in free agency while also trading Deandre Ayton, but they acquired center Walker Kessler in a sign-and-trade and brought in Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton, Kevon Looney and Ziaire Williams in free agency.

One other potential move the Lakers could make is trading Bronny James to the team his father signs with this summer. But according to Dan Woike of The Athletic, that may not necessarily happen.

"While LeBron and Bronny playing together as teammates was one of the more incredible storylines following the 2024 NBA Draft, assumptions that the father and son staying linked going forward are false, according to league sources who were granted anonymity to discuss front-office strategies.

"LeBron’s departure from the Lakers after eight seasons isn’t viewed as anything related to Bronny’s standing with the team. While anything can happen, the younger James, 21, is well-liked in the Lakers locker room and a respected worker who has improved greatly in his two years with the organization. He attended the Lakers’ Las Vegas Summer League win Saturday night and is a part of their veteran minicamp that began Monday."

The younger James is certainly not deserving of a spot in an NBA team's regular rotation right now. But he did do decently late last season after Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves suffered injuries in early April. The guard reached double figures in scoring three times in his last six regular-season games, and overall, he improved his 3-point accuracy from 28.1% during the 2024-25 season to 38.6% for the 2025-26 campaign.

His salary for the upcoming season is fully guaranteed, but he does have a team option for the 2027-28 season, which is the final season of his rookie contract.

The younger James was the No. 55 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft after spending one year at the University of Southern California. His lone year with the Trojans was somewhat marred by a cardiac arrest episode he went through during the summer of 2024.
