Arsenal close on £34m Tzolis deal to replace Trossard

Arsenal have completed an agreement to sign Christos Tzolis, with the two clubs signing off a €40m (£34m) deal.

Club Brugge have authorised the Greece winger to travel for his medical, clearing the way for him to become Mikel Arteta’s new attacker. He is set to sign a long-term contract at the Emirates.

The player’s determination proved decisive. Fabrizio Romano reports that Tzolis wanted only Arsenal, turning down interest from clubs in Italy and Germany. That stance accelerated the negotiations in the Gunners’ favour.

There was little haggling over the fee, either. Brugge were firm on their €40m valuation and refused to negotiate, and Arsenal simply agreed to pay it. David Ornstein reports the paperwork has now been signed between the clubs.

The 24-year-old arrives as a proven goalscorer. He netted 22 goals and provided 29 assists across all competitions last season, establishing himself as one of Belgium’s standout performers. A left-sided forward, he can also operate as a number 10.

Arsenal had watched him closely before moving. According to BBC Sport, sporting director Andrea Berta drove the deal, having sent his assistant Maurizio Micheli to run the rule over Tzolis during Greece’s game against Sweden last month.

His signing directly addresses a departure. Tzolis replaces Leandro Trossard, whose €18m move to Besiktas was confirmed this week. Arsenal’s left-wing options managed just 10 Premier League goals last season, a shortfall Arteta was determined to address.

Tzolis is no stranger to English football, either. He joined Norwich from PAOK in 2021 before spells at Fortuna Dusseldorf and Twente, and rebuilt his career impressively in Belgium after a difficult time at Carrow Road.

He becomes Arsenal’s third summer signing. Tzolis follows goalkeeper Illan Meslier, a free transfer from Leeds, and the permanent arrival of Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen.

Arsenal are far from finished, though. The Gunners are working hard on a deal for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, while Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez remains their priority forward target.
