Anthony Edwards Attends FanaticsFest
By now, it’s been well-documented that every team in the NBA is clamoring over the idea of adding LeBron James to their roster this summer. Additionally, it has been well documented that the Timberwolves are among the known suitors. What has not been well-documented, however, is the extent to which the Wolves have pursued one of the greatest NBA players of all time. On July 16, Scoop B took to X to reaffirm the Wolves’ interest in James.
Update: Anthony Edwards has reached out to LeBron James.

James and many other prominent names in the sporting universe convened this week in New York City for an event known as “FanaticsFest” — renowned as the “World’s #1 Sports Fan Festival.” By midday on July 16, it was unknown if Anthony Edwards was going to appear at the festival. However, Scoop posted in the early afternoon hours that Edwards would be making an appearance.
Why is this relevant, you ask? Because this could certainly serve as the final swing in the Timberwolves’ attempt to lure James to Minnesota.
After finding out all of this, naturally, I had some questions for Scoop. We connected, and I got some answers that Wolves fans may be keen to find out.
Scoop on LeBron, Ant, and Minnesota
I began by asking what many Wolves fans probably are, too: “Why do you think Anthony Edwards hasn’t publicly reached out to LeBron, considering Tim Connelly noted the importance of Ant’s input?”
“Anthony Edwards has been very busy,” Scoop explained. “He’s been heavily involved in fashion, and doing some work with Prada. He’s his own entity.”
Scoop likened Edwards coveting James’s services to dating. “Anthony Edwards is not a chaser,” he said. “LeBron is like the pretty girl that you know everyone has interest in, but instead of going straight for her, he makes inroads with and talks to her friends to let them know he’s interested.”
Albeit not a traditional approach for Anthony Edwards, it made his presence at “FanaticsFest” on Friday, July 17 all the more important. But the most intriguing part of one of Scoop’s previous pieces is music to Wolves’ fans’ ears. He wrote, “As one source put it: ‘If Edwards were to make that call, Minnesota would instantly rocket to the center of the conversation.'”
Well, here we are — Edwards has reached out — and it was received. Scoop’s late-July 16 piece states, “According to top-tier institutional sources close to the situation, the connection between the two Olympic teammates has already been activated.”
Scoop on the Variables at Play
My questions didn’t stop there.
I asked Scoop: “How much do ownership relationships matter to James?”
“They’re a part of it,” he replied. “But if that was solely the driving factor, the Golden State Warriors would be far and away in the lead, as they have lots of billionaire minority owners in Silicon Valley.”
“Does weather matter?” I furthered.
“That doesn’t matter anymore,” said Scoop. “Maybe at one point, but not anymore.”
Another song to the ears of Wolves fans.
Then I asked: “Considering you’ve written about how James’ presence eliminates complacency, do you think Minnesota’s youth/young core is a turn-off for LeBron at this point?”
Scoop replied, “Not at all.”
Admittedly, some of these responses took even me by surprise.
LeBron Wants to Bring His People Along for the Ride
After watching LeBron throughout his career, I moved into some deeper-cutting questions that I knew would be relevant to James’ camp.
“Knowing that LeBron had stated his desire to play with an A-list center, does Rudy Gobert check that box for him?”
“LeBron would surely benefit from Rudy’s defensive efforts,” he said. “However, there are other centers out there that can shoot.” He also mentioned Cleveland’s Jarrett Allen as having a similar archetype to Gobert’s.
Furthermore, I asked: “Since the basketball fit is quite clear, what other factors would you say LeBron’s camp really care about — other than contention?”
His answer to this was strikingly concise.
“Control. Having the ability to bring his own people along for the ride. Also, team flexibility.”
With lead assistant coach Micah Nori having left the Wolves for his long-awaited head coaching role in Portland, it makes you wonder if Minnesota hasn’t yet filled this vacancy by design. Maybe allow someone like LeBron to add a desired assistant to the staff himself? We shall see.
Piggybacking off of that idea, I also asked Scoop: “You’ve notably mentioned leverage being a part of the LeBron sweepstakes. Given that Edwards is a former Klutch Sports client, and Terrence Shannon Jr. is currently represented by James’ same agency, is that advantageous for Minnesota?”
“It’s very important,” Scoop said. “He (LeBron) has always involved and included his own, and the growth of Klutch Sports Group is evidence of that.”
Rich Paul, James’ best friend and longtime agent, is founder and CEO of Klutch Sports Group.
Scoop on What Remains
Knowing what we know now, there were only a few questions I had left.
“You’d previously written that Golden State may have been used as a bargaining chip for leverage, so would you say that Minnesota, Cleveland, and Philadelphia would be the likely three finalists?”
“At this point, I see Cleveland as the front-runners with Philadelphia right behind them,” said Scoop. “I would say Minnesota and the Washington Wizards would be the ‘dark-horse’ candidates as it stands today.”
The Washington Wizards have entered the chat. What I did find notable here was the absence of Miami on his list. Scoop also mentioned that Trae Young has been staunchly advocating for Anthony Davis to sign an extension with the Wizards, touting that they are building something special there.
The Wolves’ Implications and LaMelo Ball
The fan in me had to know where Scoop would rank the Timberwolves among the league if they were somehow able to reel in the biggest fish in their franchise’s history.
So I asked: “If Minnesota lands James, would you consider them a Western Conference favorite, relative to Oklahoma City and San Antonio?”
“They would be in the conversation,” Scoop said. “After all, the season is a marathon, not a sprint. It all depends on who’s still standing at the end (of the regular season).”
I furthered: “What do you think of the Ant-LaMelo fit?”
He said, “I like it. Obviously, we still have to see it. But I like it.”
The King has the Final Word
This is almost unquestionably the last version of “The Decision” we will get. As Scoop writes, “The lines of communication are officially open, the message has been delivered to the highest levels, and the ball remains entirely in the King’s court. The national media will continue to guess, but until the inner circle drops the final text, the league remains entirely in the dark. And that is exactly how they intended it to be.”
At “FanaticsFest” on July 16, LeBron told the festival-goers in attendance, “Wherever I land in the fall, hopefully, you know, if you’re a ride-or-die LeBron fan, you’ve been down with me since Day 1…It’s going to be pretty fun wherever I land. I’m going to do what I do best.”
As for what LeBron wants, he explicitly stated, “Have a chance of winning a game every night. Have fun. Be appreciated. And ultimately, God willingly stay healthy, hit April, and have a real chance of getting to the finals.”
Scoop closed by noting, “Ultimately, the choice remains entirely in the hands of the all-time great. Whether it is the calculated architectural fit with James Harden in Cleveland, a heavyweight championship push in Philadelphia, or an alpha partnership in Minnesota, LeBron James continues to hold the entire NBA landscape in the palm of his hand.”
Here’s to hoping that the King finds his way to the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
“It’s going to be pretty fun wherever I land… I seen something on social media that wherever I go we’d be in the play in or some sh*t like that and I’m not a factor anymore. That’s just a little motivation… I’ve heard Warriors, I’ve heard Philly, Miami.”
