Man arrested for alleged murder of police officer in Mpumalanga

The police in Mpumalanga arrested a 44-year-old suspect in connection with the murder of a police sergeant in Bushbuckridge.
This comes after the suspect allegedly attacked two police officers who were responding to a domestic violence complaint in the area on Saturday night.

POLICE OFFICERS ATTACKED DURING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CALL-OUT
Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said the suspect allegedly stabbed a 41-year-old police sergeant with a sharp object before pushing a 37-year-old police constable into a nearby hole, leaving the officer injured.
“The report indicates that the suspect became violent and struck the 41‑year‑old police sergeant with a sharp object whilst pushing the 37‑year‑old police constable into a nearby hole, before fleeing the scene,” said Masondo.
The police sergeant succumbed to his injuries and the constable was admitted to hospital for medical treatment.
The suspect was arrested at his home on Sunday.
“The report indicates that, after committing the crime, the suspect fled the scene but later returned once the crime scene had been cleared,” said Masondo.
INVESTIGATION
Masondo said the case docket is being handled by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI)- Hawks for further investigation.
The Mpumalanga Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has commended the officers for their swift action in arresting the suspect.
Mkhwanazi said the arrest sends a strong message that attacks on police officers will not be tolerated.
“The arrest of this suspect sends a clear message that attacks on our men and women in blue can never be tolerated. The team worked tirelessly and responded with urgency to ensure that the perpetrator is swiftly brought to justice.”
“He must face the full might of the law for the alleged brutal killing of a dedicated officer,” said Mkhwanazi.
