Brewers' Murphy Reacts to Return of Peralta

The Milwaukee Brewers are set to begin a three-game series against the New York Mets on Monday, and they will be welcoming back a familiar face.

Taking the mound for the Mets on Monday will be former Brewers' right-hander Freddy Peralta as he makes his return to American Family Field after being traded to New York in January in exchange for Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams. Peralta will face Jacob Misiorowski.

Ahead of Monday’s game, Brewers manager Pat Murphy spoke with Adam McCalvy of MLB.com and other members of the media, and he began the press conference jokingly by mimicking a question he expected. 

"Let’s get down to business," Murphy said. "Murph, what does it mean to have Freddy Peralta back in the house?”

It was a question Murphy knew was coming, so he got it out of the way himself. The first eight years of Peralta’s Major League Baseball career were spent with the Brewers, and the 2025 campaign was his best yet.

Last season, Peralta notched a 17-6 record with Milwaukee in 33 starts, both of which were career-high marks. He also logged a 2.70 ERA, which was top 10 among qualified pitchers. 

After his star-studded season, the Brewers exercised Peralta’s $8 million club option, but the feeling around MLB was that Peralta would be traded sooner rather than later. At the time, it looked as if he was going to command a large sum of money in free agency, more than what Milwaukee could, or would, offer him.

Instead, Peralta’s level of production in 2026 has fallen dramatically, and the Mets are one of the worst teams in baseball, despite having the second-highest payroll. Peralta’s struggles have been evident, but Murphy has not given them a great deal of attention.

"Yeah, I really haven't followed that closely what kind of year he's having," Murphy said. "I know him as a person, as a man, I respect him an incredible amount. But tonight, he's on the other side. So, let's figure out a way."

In general, there has not been much communication between Murphy and Peralta since the trade.

"No, I mean, I text them when they leave," Murphy said about departing players like Peralta. "If a guy's not doing well, it's like if you run into somebody that knows them well, you might FaceTime them and say, 'Hey, look who I got here,’ or something like that. It's like once you have that connection, it's real, it's not how many times you talk."

Overall, Murphy had nothing but good things to say about Peralta.

"I’ve got a great deal of respect for Freddie," he said. "Freddy was just a huge part. It's similar to Woody [Brandon Woodruff], without the injuries recently. Freddy’s just a huge part of this whole thing and my experience with the Brewers."
