ESPN Told Ryan Clark He Was Out Of A Job While He Was On The AirMEGAAccording to PEOPLE, ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro informed employees at the famed network of upcoming “difficult decisions” that had to be made as part of company-wide layoffs.
“Over the past several months, we’ve made significant progress integrating the NFL assets that we acquired into ESPN,” the memo read. “Throughout this process, we have taken the time to carefully evaluate our collective teams, resources and organizational structure to best position us for the future. As a result, we had to make some difficult decisions about job impacts that we will be communicating today.”
Included in the layoffs was Clark, a longtime analyst with the network who was reportedly informed of the decision during “NFL Live” on Monday, July 20.
Clark didn’t return to air after discovering the news.

Stephen A. Smith Breaks His Silence On Clark’s Departure From The Sports Network
“First Take” mainstay Stephen A. Smith broke his silence on Clark’s exit from the sports network today, saying he was “not happy” with ESPN’s decision.
“It hurts. It really does,” Smith said. “I understand the business. I understand layoffs come. I understand that there have been other names that have been a part of it in the past and there’s going to be names in the future. Hell, one of them might be mine.”
Smith went on to praise Clark’s work as an analyst, calling him “one of the best” in the world before saying how much he would miss working alongside him.
“I want it recognized for the record, how much I’m gonna miss this brother, how much I appreciate this brother, how sad I am that this brother is gone from ESPN,” said Smith. “And I’m not going to have the absolute pleasure of working with him for years to come.”
Smith Said He Expressed His Displeasure To The Suits About Their Decision
MEGASmith, who reportedly signed a five-year $100 million contract with Disney and ESPN last May, said he voiced his displeasure with the company’s latest wave of layoffs to the suits.
“I am not happy about this decision one bit,” Smith said. “The bosses know I’m not happy about this decision. I’ve made that very very clear. But it’s also important that myself and anybody else in the world of business be grown-ups and understand that these are the kind of things that happen when layoffs happen.”
As he finished, Smith said he wasn’t worried about Clark’s future in the business, adding that he would land somewhere great.
“I’m sorry for us that we ain’t gonna have the opportunity to continue to have you on the airwaves for ESPN and specifically First Take. It ain’t going to be the same without you,” he concluded.
