'Doubtful': Florida's Jon Sumrall Unsatisfied With Program Support

The expectations for Florida Gators are through the roof this summer after new head coach Jon Sumrall brought intensity to the program during the team's 15 practices in the spring.

Former Gators head coach Steve Spurrier thinks Sumrall can win 10 games in the regular season. Some in the national media think Florida can be a dark horse to make the College Football Playoff.
Sumrall made it to the CFP with much less when he was the head coach of Tulane last season, but he made the playoff by being the top-ranked Group of 6 conference champion. The Green Wave lost to Ole Miss 41-10 in the CFP, and certainly Sumrall will need to get more of the Gators if they are to compete in the SEC this season.
During an appearance at the SEC Media Days in Tampa Bay on Wednesday, Sumrall told reporters that he believes Florida will eventually compete for national championships, but the program needs better resources to compete in the conference.
"Can we get there?" Sumrall said, via ESPN. "I believe we can or I wouldn't have taken the job. Is it going to happen overnight? It's not going to be easy, but I think things are trending positively.
"Recruiting's going really good. ... Are we resourced like the top three in our league? Doubtful. Are we the bottom three in our league? Don't think we're that either. So whoever said less is more, never had less. I think more is more."
Earlier this year, Sumrall made similar comments to On3, suggesting Florida was about $15 million away from being able to compete with the top teams in the SEC.
"I think there are certain teams that are, I would say, $15 million above us at minimum in college football right now and in our conference," Sumrall told On3.
"For us to have championship expectations and standards year in and year out, we’ve got to make sure we’re pushing the envelope to get resources like that."
Sumrall will need to prove he deserves more resources by improving the quality of play on the field this fall.
While the Gators shouldn't be expected to win more than eight games, Sumrall can show things are moving in the right direction by competing in the SEC and making a bowl game.
