‘If students are on streets, Opposition should be too’: Gandhi seeks Modi apology for police action

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that the Opposition must be “on the streets” if the country’s students are protesting, amid demonstrations by young people as part of the Cockroach Janta Party’s protest over alleged examination irregularities and the police action during its march to Parliament on Monday.
He also demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologise for the police crackdown. During Monday’s protest, security personnel fired tear gas shells and carried out a lathi-charge to disperse protesters in Central Delhi.
The leader of the Opposition made the remarks at a press conference a day after he, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav were detained by the Delhi Police outside the prime minister’s residence, while protesting against the police action against the demonstrators. They were released hours later.
Gandhi began the press conference by playing a compilation of videos purportedly from Monday’s protest which showed security personnel assaulting protesters, including a woman being slapped and another protester being beaten with a lathi. It also showed security personnel pointing weapons at demonstrators and injuries that a protester claimed had been caused by pellet guns.
