The match got off to an energetic start as both teams battled for control in midfield, with Orlando Pirates looking composed in possession while trying to break down a disciplined NEOM SC defence.
Despite their positive build-up play, the Buccaneers found it difficult to create clear-cut chances. The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 31st minute when Benrahma curled in a free-kick that beat Sipho Chaine in the near post to put the Saudi side ahead.
The Sea Robbers almost responded before the break as Thalente Mbatha narrowly missed the target with a powerful effort from distance. Moments later, Oswin Appollis forced an excellent save after getting his shot away inside the box, leaving the Soweto giants trailing 1-0 at halftime.
THE BUCCANEERS RETURN HOME
Abdeslam Ouaddou made several changes after the restart in an attempt to inspire a comeback, but NEOM SC continued to defend resolutely while also threatening on the counter-attack. Benrahma nearly doubled his tally early in the second half, only to fire just wide of the post.
Boitumelo Radiopane found himself in a goalmouth scramble, but the striker failed to hit the target. As the closing stages approached, Abdoulaye Mariko also tried his luck from long range, but his effort drifted wide.
Despite dominating possession for large spells, Orlando Pirates could not find a breakthrough as NEOM SC held firm to secure a clean sheet and a 1-0 victory. The defeat brings the Buccaneers’ European pre-season tour to an end, with Ouaddou’s side now set to return to South Africa and turn their attention to the upcoming Betway Premiership campaign.
The term begins at home to newcomers Milford FC at the Orlando Amstel Arena. The game will kick off at 15:00 on Saturday 1 August.
