Juan Soto injury update: Mets star goes to injured list amid team's nightmare season

New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto was placed on the injured list Saturday, July 25 with a calf strain and is expected to be out for several weeks.
Interim manager Andy Green said that Soto, who was removed from Friday's game, will miss more time than earlier in the season when he missed 15 games with a strain in his other calf.

"This last week, we gave him at-bats, we gave him rest at times when we felt it appropriate and then yesterday he couldn’t get over the hump," Green told reporters on Saturday. "So is it possible we could have looked back and thought we could have moved a little bit quick on this given where we’re at today? Yes. I don’t know that ultimately changes the situation we’re in right now. I respect somebody who’s trying to get on the field and play through things."
Soto, 27, is in the second year of his record $765 million contract with the Mets. The team's lone All-Star this season, Soto leads the National League in on-base percentage (.408) and OPS (.947).
The Mets (43-61) are in last place in the NL East and are likely to miss the playoffs for the second year in a row after reaching the National League Championship Series in 2024.
With Soto out, the Mets are expected to go with an outfield of A.J. Ewing, Luis Robert Jr. and Carson Benge, though Robert is a serious candidate to be moved ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline as the team continues to spiral.
