Red Sox place newly acquired Curtis Mead on IL with fractured wrist

SACRAMENTO — The Red Sox have placed second baseman Curtis Mead on the 10-day injured list due to a fractured wrist, a source confirmed.

Boston recalled infielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester to take his spot.
Boston acquired Mead from the Nationals for starting pitcher Connelly Early on Saturday night. He left Boston’s 4-2 win over the Athletics on Monday — his Red Sox debut — after getting hit with a 94.9 mph fastball during the fourth inning. Initial X-rays came back negative.
After Monday’s game, Mead said squeezing his hand felt OK but he was in a little pain when he rotated it. He didn’t feel he would need any additional imaging.
Interim manager Chad Tracy said on Monday night that Mead felt sore but they hoped they “dodged a bullet.”
Of course that didn’t end up being the case.
“Yeah, challenging,” said Mead Tuesday night after news of the fracture became known. “I’m super disappointed. It kind of doesn’t feel real that it’s (the) first game and there’ll be break in-between the next one....I came here to play and be with the group down the stretch. So yes, definitely disappointing but hopeful that I can be back (and play).”
Mead woke up Tuesday morning “stiff and sore,” and then underwent an MRI which confirmed he had a fractured wrist.
The plan was for Mead to take a red-eye back to Boston Tuesday night and meet with a hand specialist Wednesday night. Mead was unsure whether surgery could be an option for him and would know more after visiting with the specialist.
Asked if he expected to play again this season, Mead responded: “Yeah....I hope so.”
Sogard is 9 for 35 (.257) with a .350 on-base percentage and .371 slugging percentage in 12 games for Boston this season.
