The Veltins-Arena, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, has hosted Real Madrid twice in official competition. Both meetings came in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
Madrid’s first visit, in February 2014, produced one of the club’s most memorable European away performances, as Carlo Ancelotti’s side dismantled Schalke 6-1. The following season, Los Blancos returned to Gelsenkirchen and once again emerged victorious, earning a 2-0 win to take control of the knockout tie.
The Schalke match will conclude an increasingly busy preseason schedule for Mourinho’s team. Real Madrid have already recorded victories over Alcorcón (1-0) and Leganés (4-1) in training matches as preparations ramp up.
Several additional friendlies remain before the trip to Germany. Los Blancos will face Fiorentina on August 1, followed by Ferencváros on August 8. They will then travel to Riazor on August 12 to take on Deportivo La Coruña in the historic Teresa Herrera Trophy before wrapping up preseason against Schalke four days later.
With the official campaign approaching, the series of friendlies will give Mourinho another chance to evaluate his squad, build chemistry, and fine-tune his tactical plans before competitive action begins.
