Chestnut Ridge rising sophomore Kooper Deputy finished fifth at 48 kilograms in the United World Wrestling U17 Freestyle World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, Saturday.

A U.S. Open champion, Deputy went 2-2 in the tournament. He scored a 12-1 technical fall over European champion Huseyn Rzazade from Azerbaijan to start the day, but fell 11-0 to Ukraine’s Volodymyr Boiko in the third-fifth match.
In international wrestling, two bronze-medal matches are contested at each weight, with the losers getting fifth place.
Deputy controlled the action from the outset against Rzazade and scored the opening takedown on the edge about a minute into the bout.
Rzazade countered a left-handed headlock attempt by Deputy, then tried a throw of his own on the edge that resulted in a step-out for the Azerbaijani’s lone point in the match.
Deputy broke the match open with an outside single for a takedown and a transition to a gut wrench that made it 6-1 at the break. He continued to pour it on with a duck-under for a takedown and a crotch lift to counter a Rzazade shot. A counter to a Rzazade shoulder-throw attempt provided the final points in the dominant victory.
Boiko was the aggressor early, which put Deputy on the shot clock, and the Ukrainian hit a headlock for a 4-0 lead. Deputy didn’t score in the allotted 30 seconds, putting him in a 5-0 hole.
Boiko added another four-point takedown and a turn for the technical fall.
Deputy lost a 10-7 heartbreaker to India’s Aaryan Friday. A screenshot from video appeared to show Aaryan’s shoulder blades flat on the mat just before the buzzer, but the pin wasn’t called, and falls cannot be challenged with video review.
Aaryan fell to Kazakhstan’s Bakdaulet Agabek in the gold-medal match.
