Jerry Jones’ verdict on Mark Cuban joining Cowboys ownership after losing power on the Mavericks

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones revealed his stance on embracing Mark Cuban as a potential member of the NFL team’s ownership group.
Cuban sold the Mavericks in December 2023 to the Sands Group, led by Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont, retaining a minority stake and a verbal promise that he would continue to run basketball operations.

Unfortunately, Cuban has been completely sidelined as a member of the Mavericks’ front office. However, he could earn respect as an owner in a new sport in Dallas.
Jerry Jones would welcome Mark Cuban into Cowboys ownership
In an interview with the Dallas Morning News, Jones made it clear he’d be more than happy to welcome Cuban into the Cowboys ownership fold if he were to seek additional investment.
“That’s exactly why, if you’re me, you would be open to that is because of the man. I have all the respect in the world for him, and I know what he did for the Mavericks and what he’s done for basketball… You want to associate with the highest quality of [a person] who loves the game and then also at the same time wants to do something about it. Mark leads the way in that.”
Cuban already confirmed in the same story that his private equity group would be interested in an ownership stake of the Cowboys if it were available.
With the NFL capping private equity ownership in teams at 10%, Cuban’s Harbinger Group purchasing a stake in the Cowboys would still be less than what he still owns of the Mavericks.

What went wrong for Mark Cuban on the Mavericks?
When Cuban sold the team to the Adelsons, he only took a verbal guarantee that he’d remain the team’s Governor and run basketball operations.
However, after the sale was complete, Dumont was put in place as the Governor, and Nico Harrison was given unilateral control over the team’s basketball decisions, freezing Cuban out.
This inevitably led to Harrison’s in-house rampage, which led to Luka Doncic being sent to the Los Angeles Lakers in one of the worst trades in NBA history.
Despite Harrison almost ruining the franchise without oversight, Cuban wasn’t reintroduced to the fold, with the team relying on front office hires like Matt Ricardi to do their job and fix the team after Harrison was let go.
The franchise hired Masai Ujiri to revamp the front office this summer, with old Cuban loyalists slowly leaving the franchise under its new era.
Cuban still has material profits to earn after retaining an ownership stake in the franchise, but he’s no longer the superfan-turned-owner who never missed a home game.
