As part of their 2026 MLB Trade Deadline moves, the Boston Red Sox traded Marcelo Mayer to the San Francisco Giants in return for lefty reliever Erik Miller and Minor League outfielder Carlos Gutierrez.

According to Red Sox executive Craig Breslow, it wasn’t an easy decision to deal away their former first-round pick that had so much upside.

“It was tough to include him in a deal,” he said via Chris Cotillo on X, formerly known as Twitter. “He was a really big part of this organization and looked to be part of a core. I still that’s going to happen. It’s gonna happen with the Giants at this point.”

Taken by the Red Sox in the first round (fourth overall pick) of the 2021 MLB Draft, Mayer was initially thought of as a potential cornerstone and entered the Majors with understandably high expectations, especially after ranking among baseball’s elite prospects for several years. However, injuries and inconsistency have prevented him from showcasing the kind of consistency Boston expected.

Mayer, who has been unavailable since June because of a forearm injury, was batting .220 with three homers, 22 RBIs and a .594 OPS across 70 games this season. He has been sidelined since June 25 due to a forearm issue.

Mayer has appeared in 114 career games at the MLB level and has hit seven home runs with 32 RBIs. He also has a .278 on-base percentage.

The Red Sox also acquired Adley Rutschman and Jake Rogers from the Baltimore Orioles for pitching prospects Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, along with outfielder Enddy Azocar, catcher Carlos Narvaez, and a player to be named later.
