The MLB Trade Deadline passed at 6:00 P.M. Monday evening and a former LSU baseball pitcher was the marquee piece of a seismic trade between two AL East rivals. The Boston Red Sox dealt Anthony Eyanson plus three other pitching prospects to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Baltimore's All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman.

Eyanson's professional outlook has skyrocketed since getting selected in the third round of the 2025 Draft. Eyanson is now viewed as a top-50 overall prospect across the minor leagues. He was Boston's No. 2 overall prospect and is now considered Baltimore's top prospect.
Eyanson began 2026 with Boston's High-A affiliate, but earned a promotion to Double-A after just five starts. Through 16 MiLB appearances and 68.1 innings, Eyanson has a 4-0 record with 1.32 ERA, 94 strikeouts and a 0.89 WHIP.
Eyanson spent one year at LSU after transferring from UC San Diego. With the Tigers, Eyanson posted a 3.00 ERA and a 12-2 record. Eyanson was a critical piece of LSU's 2025 College World Series title team.
In addition to Eyanson, Baltimore is also receiving Enddy Azocar, Kyson Witherspoon, and Carlos Narvaez. Boston is upgrading at catcher by adding Rutschman, who made three All-Star teams and won a Silver Slugger in 2023. Rutschman has missed significant time in each of the past two seasons.
In 2025, Rutschman only played in 90 games because of oblique strains on either side of his back, and this season he's played in just 67 games. Rutschman is currently on the IL for the third time this season. In April, Rutschman missed time in April with left ankle inflammation; in June he suffered a concussion, and is currently on the IL because of inflammation in his left wrist.
At 54-58, Baltimore is still hanging around for the third and final wild card spot in AL, but trading away a face of the franchise is the type of move a team makes when they waive the white flag. If that's the case, maybe Eyanson could get called up sooner than later so that Baltimore can get a closer look at their top prospect.
