But still not one of the best.
In The Athletic's annual quarterback rankings list, in which 21 NFL coaches and 29 NFL executives rank the league's quarterbacks under the condition of anonymity, the longtime Cowboys quarterback was ranked in the second tier among his peers for the seventh year in a row.
He did, however, receive more first-place votes from the panel than he has in past years, the article noting that Prescott got nearly as many Tier 1 votes this year (12) as he’d gotten across nine previous appearances on the list (14).
Prescott had a stellar season in 2025 despite the Cowboys missing the playoffs for the second straight season. He passed for over 4,500 yards with 30 touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl nod.
"Five of the 10 defensive coordinators polled placed Prescott in the top tier, as did a defensive-minded head coach," the article notes. "His average tier vote from defensive coaches (1.54) was much better than his average from offensive coaches (2.0). That was the second-largest gap in that direction, behind only the gap for Tua Tagovailoa."
The general conclusion: Prescott is viewed as a high-end Tier 2 QB.
He fell short of the top tier and ranks behind Tier 1 QBs Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Matthew Stafford and Joe Burrow. He falls behind two other QBs in Tier 2 — Baltimore's Lamar Jackson and LA's Justin Herbert — but ahead of a gaggle of 10 others that includes Jalen Hurts, Baker Mayfield and Caleb Williams.
Most fans seem to agree: In the fan-voting portion of the article, 56% of voters slotted Prescott into Tier 2, more than any other tier. Seven percent of voters put Prescott in Tier 1.
