Biggest opening ever in South Africa
The superhero blockbuster drew packed cinemas across the country, with social media flooded by spoiler-free reactions, fan theories and videos of enthusiastic audiences.
Many viewers praised the film’s emotional storyline, spectacular action sequences and the return of Tom Holland as Peter Parker following the dramatic events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The film currently holds an impressive 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting overwhelmingly positive fan reception.
For South African exhibitors, the record-breaking debut is another sign that audiences continue to embrace the big-screen experience for major blockbuster releases.
Breaking records worldwide
The success hasn’t been limited to South Africa.
Internationally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to an estimated $932 million (approximately R17 billion) worldwide, including around $360 million from North America alone.

However, Brand New Day has comfortably eclipsed those figures and now appears firmly on course to become one of the year’s highest-grossing films.
Marvel’s next major challenge will come later this year with the release of Avengers: Doomsday, which analysts expect to become one of 2026’s biggest global releases.

The latest chapter follows the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter Parker sacrificed his identity by having the world forget who Spider-Man really was.
Living in isolation and attempting to rebuild his life, Peter tries to reconnect with MJ and his best friend Ned before a dangerous new threat forces him back into action to protect New York City.
