‘His Character’s Been Tested’ — Patriots’ 3-Time Super Bowl Champion Wonders How Dianna Russini Scandal Will Impact Mike Vrabel
· Yahoo Sports
The New England Patriots had an incredible season in Mike Vrabel’s first year on the job. They went from a team that went 4-13 under Jerod Mayo in 2024 to one that went 14-3 under Vrabel in 2025, culminating in a Super Bowl appearance.
One of the toughest parts about experiencing success is learning how to handle it. Just because the Patriots were great a season ago doesn’t mean they’re bound to repeat as the AFC representative in the Super Bowl.

Plus, the Patriots, and coach Vrabel in particular, have dealt with some distractions this offseason. How might those impact his ability to coach?
Mike Vrabel’s Leadership Questioned By Patriots Champ
One person who has seen the different dynamics within a locker room, and how quickly the tide can turn, is former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty. The three-time Super Bowl winner never quite aligned with Vrabel in New England, but he’s been around long enough to understand how a head coach like him might operate.
During NBC’s Hall of Fame Game broadcast, McCourty opened up on how the Dianna Russini distraction could leave a mark on how the players in the Patriots’ locker room view Vrabel. McCourty questioned whether the team would still “follow [Vrabel] wherever he goes.”
“I think the thing you gotta wonder is, it’s gonna start Week 1,” McCourty said. “In Seattle, that atmosphere. They look for Mike Vrabel. They look to him when things get tough. Do they still feel the same way? His character’s been tested. Will this team follow him wherever he goes? That’s gonna be tested right away in Week 1.”
McCourty, a 13-year NFL veteran, brings up a great point. While the off-field controversy may not be a big deal to some inside the locker room, there will likely be others who aren’t quite 100% behind their head coach in the same way as before.

If those doubts creep in, and then multiply, Vrabel and the Patriots could have a problem on their hands.
For now, the slate’s clean. Yet, a tough Week 1 opponent awaits in the defending Super Bowl champions, and the Patriots know that more than anyone, having been the last team to challenge the Seahawks.
The Patriots are already under a lot of pressure, having a target on their backs as the AFC’s best team from a season ago. Now, they face their own self-created internal pressure too, thanks to the head coach’s alleged activities off the field.
