Dillon Gabriel overtakes Shedeur Sanders’ reps in training camp

Cleveland Browns first-year head coach Todd Monken still doesn’t have his starting quarterback as his first training camp with the franchise rolls on. The battle entering the season was largely viewed as a two-horse race between veteran DeShaun Watson and second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
However, Monken noted early in camp that another second-year quarterback, Dillon Gabriel, had been impressing and would earn more reps with quality play.

“I said it the other day, everybody’s competing, but you’re not guaranteed the same amount of reps,” Monken told reporters.
“So it’s up to the player to take advantage and maximize those reps, which I feel like Dillon has done. So we’ll see as we move forward; if that continues, we’ll continue to up his reps. He’s earned that. That’s what every player should expect, right? If they play well, you have to up the reps, or what’s the purpose of playing well?”
On Saturday, Monken proved true to his word, per Browns reporter Daniel Oyefusi.
“Dillon Gabriel led the 2s to end the period. Significant reduction in reps for Shedeur Sanders on a day when he was supposed to run the No. 1 offense,” Oyefusi reported on X.

It’s not the most shocking development, considering reports that Sanders has been worse getting the ball out quickly than he was last year.
ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Rizzo did his best to justify Sanders’ struggles.
“Of course Shedeur looks like that,” Rizzo reasoned. “He’s learning a new offense, the second one— I’m sorry, the third offense in 3 years. It’s not easy for a guy that doesn’t process quickly at the moment.”
However, Gabriel is in the exact same situation, and it would appear he’s not struggling in the same way.
