During a recent training camp interview with ESPN’s Mina Kimes, the star wide receiver shed some light on the heavy chatter surrounding Seattle using significantly more pre-snap motion. For a guy who built a legendary resume dissecting defensive secondaries in motion-heavy schemes down in Los Angeles, Kupp made it perfectly clear that offensive eye candy alone will not win football games.

“I think the whole point of it is you don’t motion, you don’t do all this stuff just because people say you should do it,” Kupp explained to Kimes. “There’s gotta be a purpose behind it, there’s gotta be something you’re gaining out of it and I think that’s something that we’re learning right now, where are the places, we’re gaining intel, we’re giving ourself leverage. There’s no point going out there and moving around and having guys running around before the snap just to run around. But I think we’ve done a great job of it.”

That purposeful leverage is exactly what made Kupp a receiving triple-crown winner earlier in his career, when he posted an absurd 145 receptions for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns in a single campaign. Pre-snap movement is not just about confusing opposing cornerbacks. It actively helps quarterbacks identify whether a defense is in man or zone coverage, all while giving the receiver a clean, unjammed release off the line of scrimmage.

Kupp has already proven throughout early preseason action that his route-running efficiency remains completely elite. If the Seahawks successfully implement this calculated motion into their daily playbook, they will hand their playmakers a massive schematic advantage.
