WNBA subreddit bans all discussion about Sophie Cunningham
· Yahoo Sports
The Indiana Fever defeated the Atlanta Dream 95-91 in an exciting Sunday game that required a 10-point second-half comeback and an overtime period to pull off. The win, which tied the season series at 2-2, had massive implications for the playoff standings and for securing one of the coveted top-four seeds in the WNBA standings, and the first-round home-court advantage that comes with them.
As great as the Fever have played as of late, one of their primary contributors over the season, reserve guard Sophie Cunningham, who is having a career year from behind the arc, hasn’t been playing her best basketball.

In Sunday’s win, Cunningham finished with just three points in 32 minutes and went 0-for-2 from distance. However, any fans looking to discuss the contributing factors to Cunningham’s dip in production on the r/WNBA subreddit will have to find another forum, as it has banned all discussion surrounding her.
“Why do you ban people from posting about Sophie Cunningham whos a WNBA player?” user Adventurous_Hope_101 asked.
We filter content based on Sophi because it tends to being out trolls and people that arent fans of the WNBA,” a moderator responded.

After Adventurous_Hope_101 kept prying, the moderator made it clear that the matter was already settled.
“You arent even a contributor to this sub, so l suggest you go back to the other WNBA subs. This is our decision. If you keep messaging about this you will be banned,” the moderator wrote.
Cunningham’s fans on social media weren’t too thrilled with the ruling.
“Moderation in content is absurd. Especially having people who do it voluntarily. How would you not attract the most pathetic and power hungry losers on the planet to do the job,” one fan posted on X.
“Reddit mods have a sociopathic totalitarian complex but no real powerful or meaningful achievements in real life. This is why sane, rational people, stopped using reddit years ago,” another fan added.
“Typical WNBA trying to push a bs agenda,” someone else wrote.
Cunningham, despite not being a starter, has become a controversial player due to her comments on transgender participation in sports.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” she told ESPN. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
As much debate as the comments sparked, for a subreddit focused on basketball, the reality is that Cunningham will have to step up her on-court production to justify her name being mentioned.
