It was all going to be so, so fabulous.
Hollywood, celebrity pals, and boffo bucks were waiting for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on American shores. Why, they were royals and the proverbial pot of gold awaited them.
Instead, late Wednesday it emerged that the spare heir and his made-for-TV wife were decamping for the United Kingdom , six years after using a suicide vest on the Royal Family and breaking the heart of Queen Elizabeth II.
“A return to Britain is an admission of failure, whether Harry and Meghan are intellectually honest enough to admit it or not,” royal commentator Kinsey Schofield told the New York Post . “They left Britain telling the world they needed freedom to thrive.”
Despite their puffed-up protestations, Schofield said the couple “still need the monarchy.”
But does the monarchy need them? Reports suggest that Prince William is furious and King Charles was shocked by the announcement. Here’s what you need to know.
WAIT A SECOND!
Harry and Megs — who met in Toronto where she was filming Suits — publicly lambasted the Royal Family. Taking to an interview with Oprah Winfrey to suggest the institution was racist and rushing to People magazine with a truckload of tittle tattle.
THE PLAN
The move to America — following a brief sojourn in British Columbia — was the first step in Markle’s alleged plan to be a super couple in her beloved California. They would trade on Harry’s royal stature to spin gold via lifestyle products, an unlistened-to podcast and a slew of ventures on Netflix.

“‘The F***ing Grifters.’ That’s the podcast we should have launched with them. F*** them. The grifters.” — Spotify exec and podcaster Bill Simmons.
STATE OF PLAY
Harry and Meghan are deeply unpopular in the U.K. Some royal experts are shocked at the couple’s “audacity.”
FOOL BRITANNIA
The couple are returning to a country where Markle said she’d have a “problem” sending their two children to school. And equally obtuse Harry said he could “never see a world” where he would return. And Fleet Street? They’re salivating.
KING IN THE DARK
King Charles only learned a week ago that the made-for-TV twosome were returning. But royal insiders say the 77-year-old monarch is the reason the pair are moving over the pond .
WHAT ABOUT WILLS?
While Harry and Meghan gallivanted in her beloved Tinseltown, Prince William served the crown and his country. The brothers’ relationship remains fractured. One royal insider said it was unfair to the heir that Harry “was allowed to blow up his life, attack his family, monetize private grievances and spend six years experimenting with independence, only to crawl home when it didn’t work.”

“They had America, Hollywood, enormous contracts, global name recognition and every conceivable advantage,” Kinsey Schofield said. “And six years later, they’re coming back. That is failure.”
EVERYTHING MUST GO
According to the New York Post, the pair plan to sell their fab $30-million mansion in the Santa Barbara enclave of Montecito. Sources said it costs the pair a whopping $600,000 a year in taxes and mortgage payments.
BY THE BOOKS
This is what failure in America looks like: Meghan’s Netflix doc, Cookie Queens, opened to just $328,000 at the box office behind CatVideoFest 2026. The $100-million production deal with the streamer is kaput.
LIFESTYLE LOSER
A glitch on Megs’ As Ever lifestyle brand revealed 650,000 unsold units sitting in inventory. The write-off on the jam alone? $5 million smackers.
CAKE AND EATING IT TOO!
Like a drunk in a bar brawl, it’s often seemed like Harry is taking on all comers. He lost a lawsuit against the Daily Mail and was ordered to pay costs, his multimillion-dollar legal battle to get his 24-hour armed protection reinstated was also torpedoed. That ended when he stopped being a working royal.
FOR THE KIDS?
Royal insiders said that another reason the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are returning to the U.K. is for the sake of their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5. The couple want their kids to forge relationships with cousins and other family members.
BUT WAIT!
The U.K. Sun reports that there is little to no chance that Archie and Lilibet will start seeing the children of William and Kate Middleton, cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
