Bo Bichette’s future with the New York Mets remains one of the more interesting storylines heading into the final portion of the 2026 MLB season.

After a rough start to his first season in Queens, Bichette has turned things around considerably over the past few months, but MLB insider Jon Heyman believes his improved performance is unlikely to change the decision he faces this offseason.

Bichette’s first few months with the Mets were difficult, creating questions about whether the organization had made the right investment when it signed him to a three-year, $126 million contract.

However, the veteran infielder has looked much more like the player the Mets expected to acquire over the past three months. He has also made a successful transition from shortstop to third base, giving New York another reason to feel encouraged about his future.

The problem is that Bichette’s overall numbers still aren’t particularly impressive for a player making $42 million per season. Heyman points out that Bichette currently owns a 96 OPS+, which could make it difficult for him to find a better contract on the open market if he chooses to exercise his opt-out.

Will Bichette stay with the Mets?

Bichette has an opt-out after the 2026 season, meaning he technically has the ability to walk away from the remaining $84 million on his contract and test free agency again.

But Heyman believes the odds of that happening are extremely low.

He put the possibility at just 2 percent, arguing that it wouldn’t make much financial sense for Bichette to leave guaranteed money behind and enter a market where his current production could make it difficult to secure a significantly better deal.

That could ultimately be good news for the Mets.

If Bichette continues playing at the level he has shown during his turnaround, New York could head into 2027 with a much more productive version of its expensive infielder. The Mets also have plenty of uncertainty surrounding the roster and coaching staff, so having Bichette locked in would give them at least one important piece of stability.

For now, it appears Bichette is far more likely to remain a Met than return to the free-agent market. But with the season still ongoing, a spectacular finish could potentially change the conversation.
