MSU basketball transfer Jaxon Kohler commits to Big 12 school

Michigan State basketball transfer Jaxon Kohler has made up his mind on where he'll be playing his final year of college hoops.

Kohler announced his commitment to BYU out of the transfer portal on Thursday night, according to Joe Tipton of On3. Kohler committed to BYU over his other finalist Kentucky -- he was also in contact with Kansas and Louisville.

Kohler is one of numerous players pursuing a fifth year of college basketball after a court injunction was passed that allowed another year of eligibility for players in the 2022 class. He is considered the top big man in the transfer portal at this time and will have an instant impact on the Cougars this upcoming season.

Kohler wrapped up his four-year career with the Spartans this past season, averaging 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game to help lead Michigan State to the Sweet 16. He was not selected in the 2026 NBA Draft but played with the Utah Jazz in the NBA Summer League.

BYU was always the favorite to land Kohler, who is from Utah, so the announcement on Thursday night should not come as much of a surprise. In a perfect world, Kohler would be back with the Spartans for his fifth year of college hoops, but the roster constraints of the Spartans didn't make sense for that to happen. At least he will finish up his career at a home state school like BYU, and a place where I personally will continue to root for his success this upcoming season.
