Drake Maye's unsung connection with Jalen Hurts created mutual respect

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has nothing but respect for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. Maye spoke about Hurts following Thursday’s practice, ahead of the Eagles and Patriots preseason matchup on Saturday.

The two quarterbacks have the University of Alabama in common.
Hurts played at the school for three years and won a National Championship in 2017. Maye, on the other hand, committed to Alabama originally in 2019, but he ultimately decommitted from the school and flipped to North Carolina in March 2020.
Family ties to North Carolina, particularly his father and brother playing sports at the school, played a role in Maye's decision to make the switch. But Maye has watched Hurts' career from afar, and he made it clear that he's a big fan of the star quarterback's game.
“I’m a big fan of his game. Rooting for him. I told him back when I was committed to Alabama, he was one of the quarterbacks I was watching play there. He is a Super Bowl champ. That speaks for itself," Maye said, via NBC Sports Philly's John Clark.
The two quarterbacks competed on the practice field at two joint practices, and they might compete again in Saturday's preseason game. Hurts is a Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl MVP, while Maye is trying to get to that level in only his third NFL season.
This probably won't be the last time they face each other.
