The Denver Broncos have reached the Super Bowl with five different head coaches, and Sean Payton nearly became No. 6 last season. But the only guy to win back-to-back Super Bowls as Broncos head coach was Mike Shanahan, far and away the best head coach in team history.

Additionally, he is one of the best head coaches in NFL history. With the Pro Football Hall of Fame recently inducting the class of 2026, it got us thinking about which former Broncos deserve entry into the hallowed halls of Canton. Shanahan was the No. 1 choice on our list.

Meanwhile, Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports took a shot at ranking the 20 best head coaches in NFL history. Shanahan earned a spot on that list, coming in at No. 16, which feels just about right.

"Shanahan isn't currently in the Hall of Fame, although his career is certainly worthy of enshrinement," DeAdro wrote for CBS Sports. "From 1994-98, Shanahan won three Super Bowls, including one as the 49ers' offensive coordinator and two more as Broncos coach. Under Shanahan's tutelage, Steve Young had one of the best seasons in NFL history, including winning league and Super Bowl MVP honors and throwing the most touchdown passes (6) in Super Bowl history."

Shanahan's 170 career wins sit in a tie at No. 19 for the most in NFL history. He is one of only eight coaches to win back-to-back Super Bowls, helping the Broncos hoist the Lombardi Trophy in 1997 and again in 1998. But looking at the list made by CBS, Shanahan is one of only three coaches in the top 20 who are not already in the Hall of Fame. The other two are Bill Belichick and Andy Reid, and one would have to think that both of them are locks to get in.

Shanahan is credited as being one of the best offensive minds the league has ever seen. He's won Super Bowls as a coordinator and as a head coach. The only thing missing from making his career complete is that call from Canton, and Broncos fans hope it will come soon.
