Hunter Fujikawa completed 11 of his 14 pass attempts for 212 yards and three touchdowns as No. 1 Mililani stifled No. 5 Saint Louis 42-0 on Saturday night at John Kauinana Stadium.
“It was great. Second game of the season. We were a lot more of a disciplined team tonight,” Fujikawa said. “We knew what we had to do.”
Mililani improved to 2-0 in nonconference play. Transfer Zion White, who played at Punahou, then IMG Academy before coming to Mililani, sat out with a sprained ankle.
“If it was broken I’d be out the whole season,” said White, an electrifying 6-foot-5 wide receiver. “It’ll be four weeks.”
Matai Sam was one of many starters who also did duty on special teams. He returned a fumble on kickoff coverage 22 yards for a TD.
“I saw the ball and I just went for it,” Sam said.
Toa Satele is another key defender who gets action on kick coverage.
“We’re going 100% every game on offense, defense and special teams,” the Oregon commit said.
In classic Madden-style clock management, Saint Louis chewed 6 minutes and 44 seconds off the clock to begin the game. Eight running plays netted 20 yards, including a fourth-and-1 conversion. The need for perfection was on display, and when Saint Louis was whistled for delay of game, the winds of momentum shifted.
One play later, the Crusaders fumbled after a reception, and Mililani recovered at the Crusaders’ 30-yard line. The Trojans drove to the 7-yard line, but Syrus Jones’ 31-yard field-goal attempt was wide right with 3:39 on the first-quarter clock.
Mililani got on the scoreboard with 53 seconds left in the first quarter on Toa Sam’s 1-yard blast up the middle.
From heavy formations to a double-slot spread option look, Saint Louis tried a variety of sets. Mililani’s defense stonewalled the Crusaders.
The Trojans scored on their first series of the second quarter. Fujikawa found Bless Cabrera-Hopkins alone on a deep route with no safety help for a 23-yard TD. Mililani led 14-0 with 8:03 to go in the first half.
Ashton Grace picked off a pass by Luke Shigeta and returned it 13 yards to the Saint Louis 42-yard line. Fujikawa’s 19-yard TD pass to Hayden Bajet on an out route opened Mililani’s lead 21-0 with 3:58 left in the first half.
Cabrera-Hopkins had back-to-back receptions of 31 and 8 yards before Sam rushed for his second TD, a 5-yard gash up the middle. The Trojans led 28-0 with 2:11 until intermission.
Nui Gilman’s interception gave Mililani a first down at the Crusaders’ 36-yard line. On the next play, Fujikawa lofted a perfect bomb to Cabrera-Hopkins in stride on a post route. Beating near-perfect coverage, the Trojans led 35-0 with 1:29 left in the first half.
On the ensuing kickoff, Taua Fonoti’s hit forced a fumble, and Matai Sam returned the pigskin 22 yards to pay dirt. The Trojans led 42-0 with 1:19 before halftime.
Mililani’s defense ended the first half with a sack and fumble recovery by Suniafinau Fangupo.
