Gotham-Angel City ends scoreless; Rose Lavelle leaves game after head injury

First-place Gotham FC played Angel City FC to a scoreless draw Sunday night at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, but the result was overshadowed by a first-half injury to U.S. women’s national team midfielder Rose Lavelle.

Lavelle was substituted off in the 37th minute after a collision sent her to the ground, where she appeared to hit her head. The 31-year-old remained down for several minutes while being evaluated by Gotham’s medical team, with assistance from Angel City’s medical staff, before she walked off the field on her own.
The club said Lavelle is being evaluated for a head injury but did not share any further details.
“It’s not ideal when players go down early in the game, and obviously, Rose is a key part of our team,” interim coach Shaun Harris told reporters, answering about the reshuffling after Lavelle left the game. “At the same time, everyone knows the roles and responsibility of each position, and we have players be able to step in and fill that role. Obviously, it’s not ideal, but at the same time, we have people to fill in and move certain stuff around, and I thought we coped with it quite well.”
Lavelle joined Gotham in January 2024. That summer, she competed in the Paris Olympic Games, where the U.S. won the gold medal. She scored the winning goal in the 2025 NWSL Championship against Washington Spirit. A dominant figure in Gotham’s attack, she has scored four goals this season.
Gotham is unbeaten in its last nine games and is 7 points ahead of the second-place Spirit.
Gotham controlled much of the possession over the 96-minute match but was unable to turn its chances into a goal. Its best opportunity came in the final five minutes of regulation time, when Gotham was awarded a penalty after Angel City defender Sarah Gorden’s handball.
Guro Reiten stepped up to take the penalty, but Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson made the save to preserve the 0-0 draw.
