Reds' Michael Toglia to undergo season-ending surgery. Here's why

SAN FRANCISCO – Michael Toglia, who surprised Cincinnati Reds officials when he took off his sling and tried to do some pregame activities the day after dislocating his shoulder, surprised them again Monday, Aug. 24, when MRI results revealed a labrum tear.

The infielder/outfielder, who made his Reds debut earlier this month, was to undergo surgery in Cincinnati the next day, ending his season.
“Makes you do a double-take,” manager Terry Francona said. “Damn, man, that kid, he swore he was gonna play. When I saw him in the trainer’s room the next day, he was trying to do stuff. That’s pretty amazing to me.”
Toglia was injured making a diving catch in left field in the first inning of the weekend series opener in Phoenix and exited. After the arm was popped back into place, Toglia expressed optimism that the injury's status might be subject to more of a day-to-day evaluation than a lengthy injured-list move.
The Reds recalled infielder/outfielder Ivan Johnson over the weekend to take Toglia’s place on the roster after the IL move.
