The Will Levis era in Tennessee officially is over. The Titans released their former starting quarterback Sunday, ending a three-year relationship that never developed as either side hoped.

Tennessee selected Levis with the No. 33 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He arrived with first-round physical talent and briefly appeared capable of becoming the franchise quarterback the Titans needed.

His debut only increased those expectations.

Levis threw four touchdown passes in his first NFL start, leading Tennessee to a victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The performance made his slide out of the first round look like a potential gift for the Titans.

What followed was far less encouraging.

Levis started 21 games over his first two NFL seasons, producing a 5-16 record. He displayed the powerful arm that made him an intriguing prospect, but turnovers, injuries and inconsistent decision-making prevented him from establishing himself as Tennessee’s long-term answer. The Titans effectively made their decision when they selected Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 draft.

Ward became the face of the franchise, leaving Levis without a realistic path back to the starting job. Tennessee enters the 2026 season with Ward, Mitchell Trubisky and Hendon Hooker in its quarterback room. Carrying Levis as a fourth quarterback no longer made sense. His release provides the 27-year-old with an opportunity to find a better situation.

Teams frequently search for quarterback help following final roster cuts, and Levis still possesses traits that will attract interest. He is 6-foot-4, has starting experience and owns one of the strongest arms available on the open market. The challenge will be rebuilding his confidence and proving he can protect the football.

Levis’ Tennessee tenure will be remembered as another reminder of how quickly quarterback plans can change. His unforgettable debut created hope that the Titans had found a second-round steal.
