The Dallas Cowboys added to their running back room on Monday.

They claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs after he didn’t make their 53-man roster. The Cowboys were in need of a running back after cutting Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah on Sunday.

Demercado now joins a Cowboys’ running back room that consists of Javonte Williams and Malik Davis.

Emari Demercado’s past NFL experience

Demercado spent the 2023-25 seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before landing with the Chiefs and now the Cowboys. His best season came in 2025, finishing with 44 carries for 312 yards. Overall, he has racked up 126 carries for 819 yards and three touchdowns.

He has also been a weapon in the receiving game, compiling 50 receptions for 324 yards and one touchdown.

He’s a solid third option for a Cowboys team that will try to return to the playoffs this year. They finished the 2025 season with a 7-9-1 record and haven’t made the playoffs since the 2023 season.

The Cowboys will open the 2026 season against the New York Giants on Sept. 13. Kickoff will be at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC. It will be the first “Sunday Night Football” game of the year.
