Jaylen Brown bids farewell to Boston community: ‘Boston, I love you, thank you’

BOSTON — Thousands turned out on Sunday afternoon in Boston to bid farewell to former Boston Celtics star and new Philadelphia 76er, Jaylen Brown.

The 741 Frequency Fest took over a corner of Boston Common on Sunday as fans packed the barricades around the stage at least 15 rows deep to see Brown out in the community he spent so much time becoming a part of one more time. Brown was traded to Philadelphia on July 1.

“I’m at a loss for words,” Brown said when he first addressed the crowd. “When I came to this city, I said I was going to go to war for this city. I met so many great people here, people that helped me in the community and motivated me on my journey. People who supported me when even I didn’t support myself at times. I just want to say thank you to Boston, thank you to the city, and I love you.”

A highlight video showing clips from Brown’s time as a Celtic interspersed with footage of him in the community played as the DJ played music and fans gathered around the stage to await hearing from Brown.

Food trucks lined the perimeter and local vendors offering food, drinks, and even back-to-school haircuts set up shop. Fans shot at baskets fastened to trucks and vans and played 1-on-1 with volunteers.

When Brown appeared around 4 p.m. is when the party really got started. He welcomed rappers Joyner Lucas, Lil Baby, and A$AP Ferg, with whom Brown performed his own song, ‘Just Do It.’

In tow with Brown were the 2024 Larry O’Brien Trophy, which he sent on a crowd surf at one point, and his NBA Finals MVP and Eastern Conference Finals MVP trophies.

Brown received meaningful parting gifts toward the end of the event: Boston’s Mayor Wu was on hand to present Brown with a street sign reading ‘Jaylen Brown Way,’ and he was also presented the key to the city of Boston.

Fans of all ages, many decked out in Celtics Brown jerseys -- and even a few Sixers Brown jerseys -- packed in to see Brown in the Boston community once more.

“I really look up to Jaylen Brown a lot,” said Mikayla Roch, who came out to the Common on Sunday. “He’s a great player, and this is probably going to be one of our last chances to see him.”

At one point, Brown left the stage and took a mother of four and her children blindfolded out onto the street, revealing a brand-new car that he was giving to the family. Meanwhile, fans mobbed Brown and let him know how much they appreciated what he did in Boston.

“When I first got to Boston, I didn’t imagine this. I don’t do stuff for recognition, but I’m so grateful there are so many people here showing some love,” Brown said to the large crowd. “Just know the feeling is mutual. Boston, I love you, thank you.”
