Liverpool Agree £30M 2027 Transfer of Genk Keeper Lucca Brughmans

Liverpool have just around 36 hours left in the 2026 transfer window and need to put the finishing touches on the signing of Bradley Barcola, sign at least one more winger, and hopefully try to address at least a few of their other issues at striker, in midfield, and at right back.
All of which is to say that there’s a lot of work to do in the presence to fix some of the mistakes sporting director Richard Hughes has allowed to pile up over this first two years in charge.

Today, Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign 18-year-old Genk goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans in a £30M transfer, but with the player not set to arrive until next summer. Instead, he will remain in Belgium where he has started the first three games this season for Genk after playing nine games last season.
It makes some sense as if you’re going to spend £30M on a highly rated 18-year-old who before this month had made single figure senior appearances you probably want them to play a lot, and given the nature of the position that’s a hard thing for a goalkeeper.
If Brughmans is going to start every game in Belgium, he’s clearly better spending the year there than with the Reds or at some other club on loan. That £30M fee, though, is eye watering.
In fact, it’s record setting. Because nobody has ever paid that much for a teenage shot stopper. Number two on the list is Mike Penders, who Chelsea signed two years ago for £17M. Before then, the £12M paid by Inter Milan for Sebastien Frey in 1998 was the record.
It’s a signal, then, that suggest the Reds view Brughmans as a potential starter as soon as next season—or at worst the season after that. Basically, it’s the same plan as when Hughes signed Giorgi Mamardashvili for £35M from La Liga’s Valencia in his first summer in charge to be Alisson Becker’s replacement.
That didn’t work out, and now Liverpool need a new succession plan. And they’re betting Brughmans is the next Thibaut Courtois. If that’s what he turns out to be, it will go down as a fantastic move. But even then, it won’t do anything to help with the club’s many issues in the present.
