H.S. FOOTBALL: Despite loss, Mahanoy Area has plenty to build on entering Week 2

Last season in 10 games, the Mahanoy Area Golden Bears scored just 98 points.
Now, only one game into their 2026 season, the Golden Bears are already a quarter of the way to their points total from a year ago.

Mahanoy Area scored 25 points in its season opener against Panther Valley, in the process building a legitimate offensive identity.
In 2025, it took Mick Connolly’s team nearly three entire games to find the endzone for the first time. They didn’t score a total of 25 points until Week 6.
Ground game shines
Friday’s offensive effort wasn’t enough, and the Golden Bears fell to Panther Valley, 34-25. But it’s a step in the right direction, and an encouraging one.
“The effort was there. The kids come out, they play hard,” Connolly said about his team’s effort. “They didn’t quit…We made a lot of mistakes and we know that in order for us to win, we have to play smart, hard-nosed, mistake-free football. We played hard-nosed football, but we didn’t play mistake-free football. We made plenty of mistakes and that cost us the game, but they played hard.”
Mahanoy Area was able to find an offensive identity on the ground. Quintin Rucker had 130 yards on just six carries. William Stoyer contributed nine carries for 106 yards and Tayten Matrician had six carries for 50 yards. It’s a strong recipe for success going forward, especially against a rather manageable schedule.
As many coaches will tell you, however, a rushing attack is only as good as its offensive line and the Golden Bears’ offensive line passed its first test of the season against a physically imposing Panther front.
“I don’t know what they feed them down there, but they’re big,” Connolly joked. “It was a challenge for us.”
“But our line wasn’t much smaller than theirs,” he added. “Our line performed well. We ran the ball. We ran for 200-some yards rushing. We just couldn’t stop the ball on defense, but we had no problems running against that line, which I was impressed by because they’re big. That was our concern going in, that we’re going to be able to move the ball.”
Things to fix
That being said, it was far from perfect for Mahanoy Area on either side of the ball.
Offensively, the Golden Bears had six turnovers in the game including one fumble near the goal line while fighting for extra yards. Defensively, a young Golden Bears’ unit was at times undisciplined when it came to keeping track of the ball and their respective assignments, leading to big plays for Panther Valley.
The Panthers rushed for over 300 yards in the game, with quarterback Cy Maynard totaling 139 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
“We made a lot of mistakes on defense,” Connolly said. “I think that’s where we really have to focus. Our linebackers were overcommitting. They weren’t watching the line. Their eyes were in the backfield where it shouldn’t be. The line’s going to tell you where the ball is going. And our linebackers were just, they’re getting fooled. Our D-ends were overcommitting. So we have to work on our linebacker play and our D-end play.”
While those types of mistakes can be frustrating for coaches, Connolly isn’t too concerned, considering the youth the Golden Bears’ have on the defensive side of the ball while noting all the Panthers’ miscues on Friday night were coachable.
“We’re talking about one freshman and three sophomores in that position. So they’re young, so they’ll get better as the year goes on,” he said. “It’s just some things we have to work on. But I think our defense, our defense is going to be shut down the more we get going through this year.”
