Minnesota Vikings make veteran edge decision after Tyler Batty injury
· Yahoo Sports
The Minnesota Vikings had thin depth on the edge behind Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner before Tyler Batty tore his ACL in the preseason finale at Denver, and the injury turned a soft spot into an urgent one. They flew a 35-year-old free agent linebacker into town on Tuesday and did not let him leave without a deal.
Kyle Van Noy is signing with Minnesota, Tom Pelissero reported, and he will begin on the practice squad while he builds back up. The deal reunites him with defensive coordinator Brian Flores for a third time.

They spent four seasons together in New England, where Van Noy won Super Bowl LI and Super Bowl LIII, and one more in Miami in 2020, when Flores was the head coach and the Dolphins cut Van Noy after a single year of a four-year, $51 million contract.

The scheme takes time to absorb, which is the practical value of a player who has run it in two other buildings.
Van Noy is coming off the quietest of his three seasons in Baltimore. He played 15 games in 2025 and finished with 20 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, an interception and four pass breakups on half of the defensive snaps. The year before produced a career-high 12.5 sacks, fourth in the league, along with 41 tackles and 14 tackles for loss, and it made him a Pro Bowler for the first time at 33. He has 57 sacks across 173 regular-season games and 115 starts since Detroit took him 40th overall out of BYU in 2014.

How much can Van Noy actually play from the practice squad?
A practice squad holds 16 players, and up to six of those spots can go to veterans of any experience level. Van Noy qualifies for one of them, and veteran practice squad pay in 2026 runs from $18,350 to $22,850 a week. Minnesota can elevate two practice squad players for any given game without touching the 53-man roster, and each player gets three of those elevations before the club has to sign him outright to keep using him.
Tyler Batty BYU PhotoThree appearances covers roughly the first month if the Vikings space them out, which suits a player who skipped training camp entirely. Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner will handle the bulk of the snaps in any case, and Minnesota had been shopping for a third edge it trusts since well before Batty went down.
Minnesota opens against Green Bay at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sept. 13.
