The Delhi government on Tuesday directed bus operators to ensure that panic buttons are operational at all times on their vehicles and that there are no curtains or films blocking the windows, reported PTI.
They were also told that vehicle tracking devices on buses should be functional at all times.
The directions came days after a driver and a conductor raped a 17-year-old girl inside a moving sleeper bus.
The crime took place on August 4, while the bus travelled nearly 47 km from Greater Noida to Old Delhi’s Kashmere Gate. The persons accused in the matter, 39-year-old bus driver Kuldeep and 26-year-old conductor Sandeep, have been arrested.
The bus had curtains around its berth, which prevented persons who were outside from seeing what was happening inside the vehicle, The Hindu quoted unidentified police officers as saying.
In the order on Tuesday, the Delhi government told bus operators that stopping at unsafe or unauthorised locations, particularly in the middle of the road or at intersections, was strictly prohibited, reported PTI.
It also said that all bus drivers must have a valid driving licence and should be wearing a uniform while driving.
