Chelsea have explored the possibility of adding former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum to their squad following a turbulent conclusion to the summer transfer window.
The 35-year-old is available on a free transfer after leaving Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq this summer. Initial reports suggested Chelsea had made contact over a possible deal as Xabi Alonso considers his midfield options.
However, Fabrizio Romano has subsequently indicated that Chelsea are distancing themselves from the prospect of signing the former Liverpool midfielder.
Chelsea Make Contact Over Gini Wijnaldum
Chelsea entered the final stages of the transfer window looking to strengthen Alonso’s midfield following significant movement within the squad.

Romano posted on X: “Chelsea will not sign Georginio Wijnaldum. Club currently playing down all reports about the Dutch midfielder.”
That clarification indicates Chelsea are expected to pursue other solutions rather than adding another former Liverpool player to Alonso’s squad.
Chelsea have demonstrated a willingness to recruit experienced players, with Henderson and Danny Welbeck among the veterans brought into the club’s plans.
Liverpool Success Remains Central to Wijnaldum Legacy
Wijnaldum remains closely associated with Liverpool following five successful seasons at Anfield between 2016 and 2021.
The midfielder became a key member of Jürgen Klopp’s side and helped Liverpool win both the Champions League and Premier League. His contribution during the famous Champions League comeback against Barcelona in 2019 remains one of the defining moments of his Liverpool career.
After leaving Liverpool in 2021, Wijnaldum joined Paris Saint-Germain before spending time with AS Roma and subsequently moving to Al-Ettifaq.
He made 101 appearances for the Saudi Arabian club, scoring 38 goals and providing 17 assists across all competitions before departing as a free agent this summer.
