Tennessee football all-time results on September 3

Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891. Throughout its history, the Vols have played on Sept. 3 five times and have a 2-3 record.

Tennessee last played on Sept. 3 in 2011, defeating Montana, 42-16, at Neyland Stadium.

The Vols' other win on Sept. 3 in program history was against UAB in 2005. Tennessee defeated the Blazers, 17-10, at Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee entered its season opener against UAB with a No. 3 national ranking and finished its 2005 campaign with Phillip Fulmer's first losing season as head coach (5-6, 3-5 SEC).

Tennessee played two quarterbacks against the Blazers. Rick Clausen completed 17-of-24 passing attempts for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Erik Ainge completed 5-of-14 passing attempts for 57 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Ainge completed a three-yard touchdown pass to Chris Hannon in the first quarter, while Clausen completed a touchdown pass to CJ Fayton in the second quarter.

James Wilhoit converted a 46-yard field goal for the Vols.

Tennessee has also lost to Pittsburgh (1983), Georgia (1988) and at UCLA (1994) on Sept. 3 in program history.
