Let’s start by saying that Dylan Cease was excellent tonight. Four hits, no runs against, no walks and four strikeouts. He came out after six innings and 83 pitches because we need him for the rest of the month. Very happy with John and Pete for doing that (not that it was a tough choice).

The offense really showed up today. We scored:
- One in the first: Brett Bateman singled to start the game. And, an out later, Vladimir Guerrero doubled him home (a sign of things to come).
- Five in the second: With one out, Ernie Clement singled (nice to see, he’s had a tough time of it lately). Ernie stole second. Then Andrés Giménez singled him to third. Myles Straw walked to load the bases. Bateman hit into a 3-2 force at the plate. George Springer hit a soft grounder to short, that SS Angel Genao fielded and then threw 5-10 feet over the head of the second baseman. That scored two more. And Vlad homered, 3 more RBI.
- One in the third: With one out, Nathan Lukes singled. Clement hit one to third; they got the runner at second and threw to first. The call on the field was out, but it was overturned on a Jays Challenge. It was very close; I didn’t think they would make the change. Giménez singled. And Straw doubled, bringing in a run. 7-0.
- Two in the sixth: With one out, Straw singled, Bateman walked, and Springer doubled. 8-0. And Vlad singled, 9-0.
- One in the eighth: Josh Smith homered. 10-0.
- One in the ninth: Sean Keys singled and went to second on a Kirk ground out. Charles McAdoo singled, putting runners on the corners. And Lukes singled, bringing in run number 11.
We had 15 hits. Vlad had 3 and 5 RBI (they took him out of the game to rest him for an early game tomorrow, so he didn’t get a shot at the cycle). Lukes, Giménez and Straw had two each. The only starter with an 0 for was Okamoto (0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts). Oka had an error too, on a high pop-up that Cease was under, and then was called off. Kasuma just didn’t get there in time.
The pen did the job too. Paul Sewald, Brendon Little and Braydon Fisher each had a scoreless inning.
