The organised economic boycott of vulnerable and oppressed communities has scarred Indian society for millennia. India’s caste system excluded “untouchable” castes from employment in dignified vocations for since ancient times. This cruel arrangement has trapped them for centuries in want and penury, in illiteracy and in humiliating vocations.

Boycotts in history have also been a force for good. The boycott of foreign goods in colonial India led by Mahatma Gandhi shook the British Empire. When Rosa Parks in the United States in 1955 was found guilty of violating the Jim Crow racial segregation laws by refusing to vacate her seat in a bus for a white passenger, the Black community boycotted the bus system for 381 days. This brought the bus companies close to ruin, and the US Supreme Court judged the segregation laws to be unconstitutional.
However, the boycotts organised by the Sangh are part of their ambitious malevolent project of Hindu supremacism and anti-Muslim hate.
