Oscar Piastri Summoned by FIA as Impeding Penalty Looms for Italian GP

Oscar Piastri has been called before the FIA stewards over the impeding of Liam Lawson at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix. The summons will come later with Piastri’s McLaren facing scrutiny after the No. 81 car slowed down Lawson’s Red Bull car No. 30 at Turn 2 of the circuit.

A typical instance of impeding during qualifying results in a drop of three positions on the starting grid, without any accompanying penalty points. And with this being pretty cut and dry, it’s highly likely this will happen. If he is penalized, he will start the race from sixth, losing his third-place start. He would start beside Red Bull driver Max Verstappen.
If the stewards determine that this level of impeding was either dangerous or seemingly intentional, a more severe penalty could be imposed, including a five-place grid drop and three penalty points. This is unlikely. That would place him in eighth behind Alpine’s Franco Colapinto.
The hearing itself does not deliver the result of this.
Piastri Has Already Faced This Rule in 2026
Piastri previously faced scrutiny during the Japanese Grand Prix. In that case, the FIA found that he had impeded Nico Hülkenberg’s No. 27 during Free Practice 3 at Turn 15. Piastri had been warned by McLaren that Hülkenberg was approaching on a timed lap, but the stewards issued a warning rather than a grid penalty.
Piastri’s fate therefore rests on the evidence gathered at the hearing, although it is fairly evident that he did indeed impede the Red Bull driver. Monza has supplied the drama; the stewards still have to decide who gets the bill.
