Houston Astros claim outfielder Jorge Barrosa off waivers from Arizona Diamondbacks

The Houston Astros added a new outfielder to their evolving mix there Sunday, claiming Jorge Barrosa off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Barrosa, 25, is a switch-hitter with poor offensive numbers and solid defensive metrics in limited time in the majors. He posted a .180/.241/.302 slash line and a 50 OPS-plus in 254 plate appearances across the past three seasons with the Diamondbacks, who designated him for assignment on Friday.
Barrosa has played all three outfield positions in the majors, mostly in center field, where he has accrued three defensive runs saved in 248 ⅔ innings this year, per Sports Info Solutions. The Astros said Barrosa will join them for their upcoming series in Philadelphia.
Houston optioned Jake Meyers to Triple-A Sugar Land to create an active roster spot for Barrosa. Pitcher Mike Burrows was transferred to the 60-day injured list to open a 40-man roster spot. Burrows has been on the IL retroactive to July 7, so this move does not impact timing of a potential return.
The Astros have started 11 different players in left field this year. Nelson Velázquez, claimed off waivers last month as a right-handed outfield bat, remains on the roster. They have also started eight different players in center field, including Daulton Varsho, their lone trade deadline acquisition.
Barrosa is out of minor-league options, meaning the Astros will need to keep him on the active roster or expose him to waivers. In their outfield group, none of Velázquez, Taylor Trammell, LaMonte Wade Jr. or Varsho can be optioned to the minors, either.
